My college magazine

This is my college magazine front cover.

This is my cover for the college magazine I created as a piece of coursework. I have used one image for the background and the main image. The image used is of a friend and fellow student from college holding her work folder. I chose this image, because it links with the main feature of the issue and it is of a college student which is who the magazine is targeted for. It is also portrait, making it easier to fit to the cover of the magazine.
I called my magazine 'College term', because I wanted it to relate to what the magazine is about. Next to that I have put the college logo, so the readers know what college it is about.
The colour scheme matches the college logo, although this wasn't intentional.
I have used two smaller images on the front cover, they both are of students from the college and link to the stories listed in the contents page. I put anchorage text underneath that links to the image,to let the readers know what is in the issue.
I put the issue number and date in the bottom left hand corner, so the readers know they are up to date.
I didn't use a barcode or put a price on it, because after my survey results I discovered that people would rather not pay for a college magazine.

This is my college magazine contents page.

I didn't want the contents page to look too busy and have lots on it, so like the cover I used one image for the main image and background and used two smaller images. This time I didn't put text around the images. I kept the colour scheme from the cover so it matched the college logo.

To improve, I would use more text on the cover because it is a bit plain for a college magazine. I maybe wouldn't use the colours to match the logo because it looks a bit dull and boring. I'd maybe also use images from around the college and not use the same people in my images. Also, I'd use more images relating to the stories in my contents page.

Survey Results

From the research gathered from my survey, I found that 92.3% were 16-18 years of age.

I found that 69.2% were female.

42.3% of people read magazines moderatly often.

The two most popular genres were Music and Fashion.

When I asked what courses the take in college, the majority said A levels.

I also asked if anyone had any worries about college the majority said no, with a few exceptions.

Most people said they wanted the college magazine to contain information about upcoming events in the local area, music, fashion, student opinions, term dates, advice and gossip.

42.3% want the college magazine to be issued once a month.

People want the magazine to use bold print and colours, easy to read text and lots of images.

Most people said that they would pay up to £2 for an issue of the college magazine.

The pros of using SurveyMonkey to carry out my survey, is that it's much quicker way of collecting data and totaling up the percentage that answered. It also makes it easier to explain as you don't have to calculate the numbers yourswelf so it saves time.

The cons of using SurveyMonkey to carry out my survey, is that I can't really tell wether or not a person is serious about the answers they give. This means I can't tell if the answers are truthful or not and it effects the results of the survey.

My practice magzine over and contents page

This is the cover for my practice magazine. I called it 'Kawaii', this means 'cute' in Japanese and it's based on Japanese pop culture. For the main image, I used a portrait image of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (a Japanese singer) that links to  the main story of the issue. I used sell lines like: '20 ways to kawaii  your nails' and 'How to host a party'. This hopefully would entice more readers to buy and read the issue.
The target audience would be for teenage girls, 13-16 years. I researched other magazines, but none of this genre, which would have helped. I got inspiration from 'We love pop' magazine and how they use one image for the background and central image. Also the use of smaller images on the cover related to the features inside.

This is the contents page of my practice magazine. I kept with the colour theme of my cover, which are pastels. This links to the theme of the magazine, kawaii. I organised the contents page into sections, this way the reader can find what they want to read easier and quicker. I used two images on the contents page, they both relate to the features inside the issue.

For a first attempt at making a front cover and contents page, I think it's not that bad. It doesn't look professional an I know that I wouldn't personally spend money to read it. To improve I would use brighter colours to stand out, maybe use a nicer font because the one I used is a bit boring.

Fabulous!

Magazines

Fabulous! magazine comes free with The Suns's Sunday newspaper.
I think it's target audience is based on gender and is aimed at women. This is mainly because the sell lines indicate that the stories inside are about how to look good, celebrity gossip and men. These are things that stereotypical women would be more interested in.

It is mostly about fashion, showing them on how to interpret celebrity fashion at a cheaper prices.
They also have interviews with certain celebrities etc.

The masthead (title) stands out clearly against the background so it's easy to identify in a shop or news agent's. This magazine doesn't have a logo or a covermount, which could be because it is free.

There isn't a skyline, but the main image is very eye catching. The main image is of the celebrity featured in the main article of the issue and the anchorage title, 'In the mix'. It also overlaps the masthead.

The cover contains sell lines such as, 'Geek to Gazillionaire, the men worth investing in', and 'Suck it up, drink yourself slim and sexy'. This entices the reader and makes them want to read it.

There are many advertisements throughout the magazine suitable for it's target audience, such as: Skin cream, Fabric softener, Mineral water, Kitchen roll, clothes, Thorpe park family deals and Cif cleaner.

A lot of these advertsisements are from big name brands and shops like JJB sports, Olay, Boots, HMV and Cif. I think that only the bigger brands can afford the publicity in Fabulous! magazine because it's a free magazine.

Kerrang

Magazines

Kerrang is a best selling magazine, aimed at an audience of about 13+
It is a music magazine, focused mainly on rock music.

The title is bold against the colour of the background, but the center image overlaps the center of the manstead.
The magazine includes posters of some of the artists featured in the issue, which also attracts more customers.

There are many sell lines to attract the reader.
There are many buzz words.
The central image is tied in with the main story of the issue.
There asre smaller images to tie in with the smaller stories inside the magazine.
All of the advertsments used on the cover is well suited for tennagers making it perfect fot the target audience.
